Single strand narrative/ Multi-strand narrative
Introduction
Single camera is when you one camera to produce a video and the shots are done in a careful and efficient order. There are advantages and disadvantages of using single camera. Advantages: It’s cheaper than using multiple cameras because you will only need one camera, which means you won’t need to buy a lot of equipment.
Also when you are only using one camera you have more control over what’s going. This is important because you need to have control over the production and sure the scenes and shots are in the right order. Another advantage of using single camera is that it’s easy get from one place, which means that you can use more location simultaneously.
Also the quality of the video will be the same because you will be using the same camera. There are disadvantages of single camera production is that you can only get one angle at a time because you are only using one camera so this will be more time consuming because it will take a lot of time if you want different types of angle for your video.
Another disadvantage would be that since you’re only using one camera it will time to edit the footage because a lot of the film will be on one camera examples of single camera TV shows which fall into different categories which are comedy (Frasier), sci-fi (The Big Bang Theory), crime (CSI), teen (Hollyoaks), thriller (The X Files), and period drama (Downton Abbey).
Todorov's Theory (Narrative)
Tzevetan Todorov is a philosopher who is from Bulgaria. In the year 1969 Todorov thought and produced a theory about films. He believed that this theory was applied to any and all films and that they all followed a same narrative pattern.
The pattern was that they all go through different stages, which is called equilibrium, disequilibrium, acknowledgement and then solving, and then equilibrium.
The number of stages that a narrative can progress through is five; which are:
1. A state of equilibrium. (This is when everything is normal and, as it should be.)
2. A disruption of that order by an event. (This is when an event occurs which creates a problem.)
3. A recognition that the disorder has occurred. (This is when it’s realised that a problem has occurred.)
4. An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption. (This is when they try to resolve the problem.)
5. A return or restoration of a new equilibrium. (This is when everything’s back to normal after the problem has been resolved.)
A single stand narrative is when a story is told from only one person’s point of view. It is focused on a single person or character; an example of single stand narrative would movies like Spiderman or Batman. Multi-strand narrative is when a story is being told from more than one person’s point of view.
Also it could be two stories of two different people, which intervene or come together. An example of this would be TV soaps like Eastenders because it has more than one story also Coronation Street because it ends one story and begins another without confusing the audience.
Linear/Non-linear
Linear is when a film or show is in a chronological order. This means everything is in order and it has a beginning, middle and an end in that order. Non-linear when a film or a show is not in order and switches from one place to another and could have flashbacks.
For example in movies if someone is sitting at home watching TV the next will be him sitting in a totally different place doing something else. Examples of non-linear movies would be Sin City and Kill Bill.
(Frasier)
The lighting for that has been used in this program is natural lighting because most of time is spent indoors in the house and when they outside they make the image brighter to make it easier to see. The sound that is used in this program is mostly music in the background, for example is everything is calm then the music will be at normal speed but if something existing is happening then the music will speed up.
This sets the mood and also creates tension. The camera angles that are used in this program there are a wide range of shots, which include close up shots when it’s only focusing on one person. Also there are medium shots when it shows them having dinner as a family and there are some long shots when they show the house.
Sci-fi (The Big Bang Theory)
The lighting for this program is all-natural which means that there are no special effects or additional lighting used. The sound that is used in this program is both dietetic and non-dietetic.
This is because there are people laughing in the background as well as people talking and other natural sounds such the door closing. A wide range of camera shots is used in this program. For example when it’s focusing on person it’s a close up and medium shots used there is a group of people.
Initial ideas:
Seven deadly sins (show each sin
with different music in the background)
A man either does or witnesses
the seven sins.
· lust-weird desires
· gluttony- regularly eating too
much
· greed- selfish
· sloth-lazy
· wrath- extreme anger
· envy- jealous
· pride- good feeling for an
achievement
Jail story
· a picked out of a line up
· about to kill him self
· flashback
· with a twist in the story
First of all, our short film is about the seven sins. This is because we
have found that a majority of the people that we asked to fill our
questionnaire preferred the idea. We decided that this would be a good mood to
show in the film because it makes people nervous and anxious when watching some
of the sins. The way that we decided on the mood of our film is our researching
the moods that are shown by other, already existing, movies and then
integrating that information into our project.
This is our five
minute idea:
For each of the seven sins there will be a
certain event occurring. For lust there will be the main actor wanting an
excess of power, by using a lower classed car. The main actor will be driving
the car and then he will want more power, break horse power, but his car is
very slow and then breaks down.
After the car breaks down we could have someone
next to him in a better car driving off. This would be a representation of (2)
envy, as he will be jealous of the guy with the better car.
For the sin, wrath, we can have the main actor
getting angry while arguing with someone about a certain topic in his
workplace. Then we can show the main actor losing control, kicking, throwing
things around an then finally leaving, slamming the door.
For the second sin, greed, the main actor will be
shown in a restaurant/shop ordering too much food. This will show that he is
being greedy by wanting more, but it will also show the sin
Gluttony as he wants an excess of food.
For the sin, pride, we can show the main actor
playing a game and then getting an achievement. When he gets the achievement
that is hard to attain he will start boasting and thinking that he is better
than everyone else because he got that achievement. We could then show him
walking around and telling people about his achievements.
For the sin, sloth, we could have our main actor
being lazy after sin (4,5), because he has had too much to eat and then does
nothing an just lies around.

Risk assessment/ location
We as a group will need to carry out a risk assessment because we need to make sure that that the location we are going to use to for our 1 minute video. We need to make sure that the location we use is safe. Also we will need to look at the location that we are going to use because it could problems such lose wires which could be dangerous because someone could trip over them and hurt themselves. In school we will need to make sure that any room we use that the wire are hidden and there are hazard which might cause an accident.
